New students are welcome to attend two
classes for free to try it
out. Afterwards, the cost is $4.00 per class or $30 for a
10-class card and $20 per card for each additional family member. Initially, students can train in ordinary gym
clothes that
permit full movement of arms and legs. After a few weeks students
are expected to have a white karate uniform (gi). A basic gi can
be purchased from the instructor for $20 or bought from Amazon or any
martial arts supply company.
New students are unranked, or 9th kyu. As students progress in the kyu system the number decreases to 8, 7...to 1. After 1st kyu students move to the dan ranks (black belt). Rank testing will occur approximately every three months. Testing requirements are found here. Testing for brown belt ranks of 3, 2, 1 kyu and dan levels will be specially scheduled with the West LA Karate School. The Ridgecrest Karate School will follow the following belt colors to correspond to kyu ranks.
A word of caution regarding belt colors. Belts can be symbols of skill and dedication and be moviational toward continuing training. However, too much emphisis placed on obtaining the next belt can be counter-productive. Joy in karate should be found in the practice itself, not so much in the periodic reward of a new belt. If the belt is over emphisized then a student may feel that once a particular belt is earned the goal is achieved and training can end. That mentality would rob the student of the most profound benefits of karate that are only found through years of training while on the path to mastery. Read the book "Master: The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment" for further insights. |
